On Tuesday, we had Shane Paterson from LEVNT lead our school board through a session on our identity as a Lutheran school. The session was framed around the national framework called Growing Deep. This document is a detailed framework that clearly outlines our strengths of a Lutheran school and provides guidance on how we positively engage, support and interact with our whole school community. It was a fantastic time of reflection, discussion and planning for keeping our focus on Christ as we move into the future.

Shane’s time spent with the school board is an example of the strength of the relationship we have with LEVNT and the support they provide all schools in the region. Thank you, Shane, for your time visiting St Paul’s!

The foundation of Lutheran education is the gospel of Jesus Christ, which informs all learning and teaching, all human relationships, and all activities.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services, as part of the mission of the Lutheran church, are communities of worship and service, sharing and living the good news of Jesus Christ.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities which acknowledge God as creator and join in the ongoing creation and care of the world and all people.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities that recognise that God has intentionally created each person and that each person is uniquely gifted to live in relationship with God and others.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities where grace abounds. While recognising the brokenness of humanity, they reflect the unconditional love of the Father, revealed through the saving work of his Son, Jesus.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities open to the influence of the Holy Spirit, who invites and equips for a life of worship, learning and service.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities that value learning as God’s gift to people for their wonder, growth, and to inspire them to respond to the needs of the world.

Lutheran schools and early childhood services are communities of hope, nurtured by the promises of God’s word, love and forgiveness which empower staff and students to embrace the future with confidence.

I am grateful to be working in such a supportive environment with fantastic families, staff and students.

Building resilience not only helps a child deal with current difficulties, but it also helps develop a resilient mindset that will help them deal with challenges later in life. All children are capable of working through challenges and coping with stress, but they require guidance and support from both the school and the home.

I encourage you to spend time looking through the below resources on building resilience:

Resilience | St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School - Henty (schooltv.me)

Resources | St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School - Henty (schooltv.me)

There is an important reason why we speak about resilience and perseverance as part of our Learner Profile. We are intentionally supporting students to view challenges and mistakes as an opportunity to grow. We emphasise the importance of developing a positive mindset and reinforce there is always a resolution to any issue we are confronted with. We acknowledge that the resolution may require creativity and hard work to overcome.

Resilience is important for a child’s mental health. It is their ability to bounce back from failure, challenges, adversity and stress. It’s not something that children have or don’t have but a skill that they develop over time as they grow.

Yours in Christian Service

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The Importance of Building Resilience in our Students

Our Identity as a School

HAPPENINGS WITH HOLLIE

Conferences + IEP Meetings

Our Conferences plus IEP Meetings are well underway.  The aim of these sessions is to build connections between home and school, it’s collaboration in action.  They are a great way for children to share what they’ve been working on at school, their goals and work they’re proud of.  It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions and help us understand your child.  Thank you for making the effort and the time to chat about your child.  This year we will have two sets of Conferences, the second will be held early Term 3.

Goal Setting

Students have been busy setting goals within the classroom.

Goal setting makes up one aspect of our Well-being Program here at SPH. Our Learner Profile says:

We believe that setting personal goals is important, with the aim to improve student growth and achievement. Students are encouraged to set, work and reflect upon goals and these are communicated regularly. This process allows students to have a voice and take ownership of their learning journey.

As a staff team, we have reflected on the importance of further developing what this looks like in our classrooms to ensure it is meaningful for students.

All students have/will be setting at least three goals:

1.  A goal relating to English

2.  A Maths goal

3.  A Learner Profile goal- for Term 1

(this is linked to being a Risk-Taker. In particular, I can respond to challenges with persistence)

We are reminded in Philippians 4:13, that… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

New English Syllabus

The new English Syllabus for K-2 has been implemented in our classrooms (and across the state). This week I participated in Professional Learning based on the 3-6 syllabus which will be rolled out across NSW in 2024. Some key takings:

+ Explicit focus on the writing process and integrating this within other curriculum areas.

+ Exposure to a wide range of texts – novels, texts by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Australian Literature, picture books, plays, poetry, hybrid texts, individually chosen texts.

+ The importance of daily writing, reading and being read to.

The new syllabus is heavily based in research and although quite a large change, it’s exciting when we know it’s based on best practice.

Our Team:

What a great staff we have at SPH! I feel blessed to work alongside such committed and passionate educators. This photo was taken at the beginning of the year. We spent time reflecting on God’s creation and then went out into God’s creation, to Morgan’s Lookout, where we spent quiet time reading and reflecting on God’s word. I can’t thank the staff enough for their efforts on such a successful start to the year.

Have a blessed week!

YEAR K & 1

The K/1 class have been very busy doing lots of sorting in maths. We have sorted shapes, using different attributes, such as colour, size and shape. We have had great fun trying to work out how other people sorted their numbers. Some sorted using colour, smallest to biggest, how many digits, even odd and even. There was some great thinking and sorting involved!

We have also been grouping large collections to make the counting easier. We found that sorting into groups of 5, 10 or 20 and then counting, was quicker than counting by ones – great work, mathematicians!

YEAR 5 & 6

Hi families,

Tuesday morning, 5/6 lead the school in chapel with a focus on perseverance. Our Bible reading was from Matthew 4: 1-4, Jesus was in the desert for forty days and was the ultimate display of perseverance. The message of our chapel was that God teaches us to persevere when faced with a challenge and that we should apply perseverance in all the challenges we face at school.

In mathematics, we use our perseverance in our weekly challenge. Last week, we had fun solving this problem. Have a go!

Many blessings,

Miss Ridley
